Colophon

In the publishing world the colophon is a description of how a book was produced. I’m going to follow the general setup here, assuming the one or other might be interested what was used to put this site together.

This site was produced on the following systems:

  • My self made PC clone with an AMD 1400 Athlon processor, 512 MB Ram, 100GB of hard drive space. The system runs as a dual boot system with SuSE 9.1 [9] and Windows 2000 [11].
  • My little Dell Inspirion 1100 Laptop [4] with a 2.4 GHz Intel Celeron chip, 512 MB RAM and a 30GB hard drive. Also this system has to be a dual boot. It runs now SuSE 9.1 and also WinXP Home SP1 [11], which I don’t use that often, mainly for testing and when it needs to be Windows.

Most of the coding for the first (temporary) incarnation was done in the Linux environment with the help of Quanta+ [8], which is indeed my favorite editor. For the style sheets I like to use TopStyle [10], which runs fine with CrossOver Office [3]. Now that I switched to WordPress, I don’t think much coding will be needed, at least for a while.

The graphical part was done mostly in the windows environment. Although I really like the GIMP [5] a lot, it is not quite up to par with programs like Paint Shop Pro [6], Photopaint [2], or Photoshop [1]. This especially holds true when it comes to the text tools.

I love fonts, and thanks to the fact that I use Corel [2] products, I do have a lot of them. Professional fonts, that is. The font used in the graphics is Bank Gothic MD BT. The font used in the html part is Verdana. The latter I prefer when it comes to on screen reading, it seems to be easiest on my eyes. The graphics were created with the help of Adobe and Corel graphic editing software.

The wonderful writing you can read on this site was originally typed up with OpenOffice.org [7]. Although Quanta+ does have a spell checker, I very much prefer a writing tool to set up my text, do the proofreading, and not to forget the spell checking.
